The Quino Checkerspot (Euphydryas editha quino) is an endangered species found mostly  in the foothills of southern California.  These are perched on owlsclover (Castilleja exerta), one of its food plants.  Once common in southern California, this butterfly remains only at a handful of locations.  The original 11 x 14 acrylic was painted in 2004.  I have painted several versions of this painting, mostly requested as departure gifts.  The art is available as an 11 x 14, 8 x 10, or 5 x 7 inch print, or a 4.25 x 5.5 inch note card.
