The  Intermediate Mariposa Lily (Calochortus weedii var. intermedius) is a rare lily found in chaparral of the foothills of Orange, Los Angeles, and western Riverside Counties.  Scarce in most years, they can be quite common where found following wild fires. Southern California Native Lily Series.  Rare Lilies.  Original: Gouache painting by Fred M. Roberts (March 2005). This painting is based on the typical color variation seen in this mariposa lily.  The flowers can be quite variable, ranging from a pale or lemon yellow with few markings to a deep purplish-pink, espcially in the Chino and Puente Hills.  These later flowers were often mistaken for Plummer’s mariposa lily.  The art is available as an 8 x 10 or 5 x 7 inch print.  It is also available as a 4.25 x 5.5 inch note card with envelope.
