Southern California coastal form of the Cactus Wren (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus) on a prickly pear pad.  Not all cactus wrens are found in the desert.  The coastal form, which is often a darker bird are seen in cactus patches along the southern California coast.  The coastal form is fairly threatened and once was considered for potential addition to the endangered species list.  Original: Gouache painting by Fred M.
